The Importance of Mineral Salt
Salt has had a bad reputation for years.
We often hear that we should eat less of it, and for good reason. Too much sodium in the diet can contribute to high blood pressure and increase health risks over time.
But for athletes, the conversation is a little more complicated.
Sodium is an essential mineral and electrolyte. We need it for normal body function, and when we exercise and sweat, we lose sodium along with fluids.
The goal isn't to consume as much salt as possible.
It's understanding when and why our bodies need it.
Sodium is an essential electrolyte
Sodium plays an important role in maintaining normal fluid balance and contributes to normal functioning of the nervous system and muscles.
Our bodies carefully regulate sodium levels because it is essential for several processes that keep us functioning normally.
For someone who exercises regularly, this becomes particularly relevant during longer or harder sessions.
We lose sodium when we sweat
Sweating is one of the body's most important ways of regulating temperature during exercise.
But sweat doesn't contain only water. It also contains electrolytes, including sodium.
The amount of sodium we lose can vary significantly from person to person. Some athletes are naturally heavier sweaters than others, and sweat losses can increase with exercise duration, intensity and hot weather.
This is why there isn't one perfect hydration or salt strategy for every athlete.
When does salt become more important?
For a short training session in moderate conditions, most people don't need to start adding large amounts of salt to everything they eat.
Our normal diet usually provides plenty of sodium.
The situation changes when we're exercising for a long time, particularly in hot conditions or when we're sweating heavily.
During these sessions, replacing some of the sodium lost through sweat can form part of a broader hydration strategy.
This is particularly relevant for endurance athletes spending several hours running, cycling, paddling or racing.
Salt isn't a substitute for water
It's important to remember that sodium and hydration work together.
Taking salt doesn't mean we can ignore our fluid needs, and drinking large amounts of water doesn't automatically mean we've replaced everything lost through sweat.
For longer sessions, we need to consider both.
How much we need depends on factors including exercise duration, temperature, sweat rate and individual tolerance.
What about mineral salt?
Mineral salts can contain sodium alongside other minerals, depending on the type and source.
However, we shouldn't assume that a salt containing more minerals automatically provides a better hydration strategy. The amounts of different minerals can vary, and sodium is generally the electrolyte most directly relevant to replacing sodium lost in sweat.
The bigger picture matters more than the label.
Food comes first
For everyday health, sodium doesn't need to come from a specialised sports product.
It's naturally present in many foods and is also commonly added during cooking.
For most people, getting an appropriate amount through a balanced diet is enough.
For athletes doing prolonged exercise, sports drinks, electrolyte products or appropriately salted foods can be useful depending on the circumstances.
Don't overdo it
This is the part we shouldn't ignore.
More salt isn't automatically better.
Regularly consuming excessive amounts of sodium can be harmful to health, particularly because high sodium intake is associated with increased blood pressure.
Our approach should be simple: understand what we're losing, consider the conditions we're training in and replace what we actually need.
Know your own body
There is no universal salt strategy for every athlete.
Two people can complete the same workout in the same weather and lose very different amounts of sodium through sweat.
That's why longer training sessions are the perfect opportunity to experiment responsibly with hydration and fuelling.
Salt isn't the enemy. It's an essential part of human physiology. The key is knowing when we need more, when we don't, and finding the balance that supports both performance and long-term health.
